Types of Teams Offered at EVJ

EVJ plays in the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball. All teams will compete in one of three divisions, Open, Championship or Club

We offer three main types of teams:
National (Elite/Select, Tempe Only), 12s-18s
Travel (T1, Gilbert Only), 15s-18s
Regional (Navy/Green/White, Tempe & Gilbert), 10s-18s.

  • Every team is performance based, which means that an individual’s playing time is determined by practice and tournament performance (Futures program has a slightly different philosophy noted below).
  • If a player attends practice regularly, works hard and demonstrates the ability to perform the skills necessary to play the game, she will be given the opportunity to play.
  • When given the opportunity to play, each player must bring to the court the skills that she demonstrated in practice that earned the playing time.
  • If play in the game does not match her success during practice, then she must rededicate herself on the practice court. This cycle can only lead to success for the team and the player.
  • Playing time is at the sole discretion of the coaches as it relates to player performance and team strategy decisions.

National (Elite/Select) TeamsĀ

(Age groups 12s-18s)

National teams carry a maximum of 12 players. Exceptions can be made on occasion for 18s.

Each of these teams is highly competitive with the goal of finishing the season competing at the Junior Nationals (JN’s) in late June/early July. 18s will finish earlier. All teams will compete regionally as well as travel out of state multiple times to compete nationally. National teams are committed to post-region play.

College Bound/Commitments

Travel (T1) Teams

(Age Groups 15s-18s)

Travel teams carry a maximum of 12 players. Exceptions can be made on occasion.

Each of these teams is highly competitive and will compete regionally as well as travel out of state to compete nationally (typically one travel tournament). Teams are also offered (optional) post-region play.

Regional (Navy/Green/White) Teams

(Age groups 10s-18s)

Regional teams typically carry up to 12 players.  Exceptions can be made on occasion.

Each of these teams is designed to compete at the regional level (the state of Arizona).  Regional teams are also offered (optional) post-region play. Limited regional teams may add travel out of state.

Note: Futures teams (10s-12s) operate with more of an equal playing time philosophy.  However, attendance, work ethic, and skill execution are still factors considered and playing time is at the sole discretion of the coaches as it relates to player performance and team strategy decisions.

Arizona Region of USA Volleyball Tournament Information

All tournament information (including schedule and results) is retrieved from the Arizona Region's website. Tournament site locations and times will be selected 3-7 days prior to the tournament. All tournament dates are posted to each team's home page and the club calendar.

Arizona Region Tournament Division Defined
The Arizona Region of USA Volleyball provides regional tournament divisions available to our teams including the Open Division, Championship Division and Club Division. Each division is scheduled as follows:

Open Division (eligible age groups 14s-18s)
Teams in Open include the elite 14s and high school teams and will generally travel to two or more National Qualifiers and attempt to qualify for the Junior National Championships.  This division schedules a 2-day seeding tournament plus 4 regional tournaments including Regional Championships. This allows teams time to travel to National Qualifiers in January, February, March, and April. The tournament day typically starts play at 8am and ends at approximately 4pm and includes pool play plus one cross-over match. Most of these tournaments will be scheduled on Sundays. Age groups are mixed during the regional tournaments and then all teams will split out for their respective age group Regional Championship tournaments at the end of the season.

Championship Division (eligible age groups 13s-18s)
Teams in Championship include the non-Open 17s/18s and any 13s-16s that choose to enter the Championship Division. 17s/18s play together in their own Championship division while 13s-16s are mixed during regional tournaments. The Championship division schedules 6 regional tournaments (including 2 seeding tournaments) and the Regional Championship. The tournament day starts play at either 8am or 3pm (1/2 days) and includes an 8-team bracket format. These tournaments will be scheduled on Saturdays. All teams will split out for their respective age group Regional Championship tournaments at the end of the season.

Club Division (eligible age groups 12s-16s)
Teams in Club include the remaining 15s/16s, the remaining 13s/14s and all of the 12 & Under teams. These teams will be restricted to playing teams in their own/paired age groups the entire season, with no movement between age groups.  The club division schedules 6 regional tournaments (including 2 seeding tournaments) and the Regional Championship.  The tournament day starts play at either 8am or 3pm (1/2 days) and includes an 8-team bracket format.  These tournaments will be scheduled on Saturdays. All teams will remain in their own/paired age group for the Regional Championship tournaments at the end of the season.

EVJ reserves the right to enter each team in the appropriate AZ Region tournament division once teams are finalized. Also, please be patient as we will not always know the location of the tournaments until a few days prior to the play date.

Multi-Day (in-state and out-of-state) tournament participation information is included on team pages and varies for the national, travel and regional teams. National teams are committed to post-region play (through June/early July; except 18’s) as part of their contract.
